They can apply for refugee status without leaving their home country. Just show up at a US Embassy and ask for refugee status. It is easier to get refugee status than asylum though the requirements are very similar.
Responsible asylum-seekers would present themselves at the border, and only LATER send for their children – they would not drag them along human trafficking corridors. They are being brought as props/shields to avoid deportation. I can’t care for people’s kids more than they do

In this case, that’s a valid point. The mother of the man said that is “calm” where they live & her son, his wife, & child made the trip for economic reasons. She asked her son to leave the child with her. Such a shame. They had humanitarian visa from Mexico.

in some places for some people that's a possibility. for others it simply isn't, and asylum can be your ONE shot to get your family out of an unsafe region to ours. If they can do that, they would likely not need to seek asylum and would pursue regular immigration.
