Your information isn’t wrong, I was abused as a child and in juvenile detention. I was hyper violent with mental health issues until about 2008 when I chose to stop taking “meds” that weren’t helping and focused on my mind/life. I smoke pot and haven’t hurt anyone in a long time.
-
I will never hit my child, I’ll never forget the feeling. The dread. I’ll never forget. I’m sure I can still harm an adult but I’ll never beat my children, that cycle is dead in my family. I won’t give up on my children when they need me to think critically.
-
Good for you ending the cycle of abuse Mike. It takes a lot of strength. I'm sorry you had to deal with that as kid.

Knew a man who said "We may be poor, but we're not so bad people that we hit children".

Based off this chart, it would seem the best way is rare to moderate levels of physical discipline. Which I would agree with as that seems to imply a swat on the behind, or the back of the hand, and not knocking a child to the ground and beating them MMA style.
-
I’ll give the study a lot of credit though. It’s a lot more honest than most, which just classify spanking as child abuse, and then use a broad definition of abuse to claim spanking is auto bad, without factoring in bullying, or other abuses.

How did they prove causation?

I wouldn't say it should be disregarded, but at the same time it should not be valued unless causation is proven either. At this point it's just data. Data in and of itself is of little value.

It's not of no value, it's just of little value. It's a unproven theory. It can point us in the direction for additional research. It's like the Earth being the center of the universe. It was an unproven Theory. It's important we don't take unproven theories too far.

My original question was "how did they prove causation?". I'm not disregarding anything. I'm asking the details of the study so that I can correctly consider the information. Don't you think we should all research studies to correctly measure the studies validity?

So, moderate physical punishment, aka good disciplinary parenting. Got it
-
I don't think physical punishment is needed. To punish my kids, I shut down access to their electronic devices. That is far more efficient and effective.
-
Mine are a younger age where a light spanking and/or timeout affect them more. As they get older, then we will have to change it up. From the chart and info, it seems the extreme implies beatings on a frequent basis

The word “hitting” conjures up tones of abuse. Discipline or correction by a swat on the behind is very different and the two should not be confused.
