My alcoholic mother was physically and emotionally abusive. I left home at 17 and never spoke to her again. It has made a huge difference in my life and I have no regrets.

I’m sure that is the case – it’s very sad in this world: if you lose a parent to illness, people are incredibly sympathetic; if you lose a parent to evil, not so much.
