The biggest issue here is that the adult child many times does not have the RIGHT to leave on their own. They do not have adult rights the way other adults do. It's not a precisely fair comparison.

My alcoholic mother was physically and emotionally abusive. I left home at 17 and never spoke to her again. It has made a huge difference in my life and I have no regrets.

I’m sure that is the case – it’s very sad in this world: if you lose a parent to illness, people are incredibly sympathetic; if you lose a parent to evil, not so much.
