Same way that they’re taking today’s standards and applying them to historical figures. Mind boggling.

Cernovich nailed this point a few months ago in the aftermath of the whole "Patreon Purge" debacle:https://twitter.com/Jevaughn_Brown/status/1124152263482707969?s=19 …

Exactly. People get punished for not being prophets.

It's like a teacher changing marking criteria, then retroactively changing grades, insisting students get kicked out of post secondary education.

People respond to their control systems, as you well know. Reward something, you get more of it

Eh not quite the best analogy though. I’m not a fan of their policy either but it’s more like a movie theater starting to show nc17 movies, then they outlaw such films and can’t play that film anymore...

Wait until the Supremes realize what these companies are getting away with. Software is abstract enough for things with clear analogues to slip through. They all have EULA that says "we can change the rules at any time without notice. Your continued use is consent"

Because, deep down, social media platforms know they are publishers, so they know they are liable for the content they *choose* to host. They may not always be legally liable, but they are always socially liable, and they know the rabid left will come after them.

Youtube should allow time to remove old videos that violate new rules. Since it's a live site, when new rules apply to old videos there needs to be a grace period.

Well, if a company doesn't abide by rules regarding ex post facto, then they can do it. Definitely not a tactic that will get customers on their side.

Like retroactively changing building codes after the building is completed.

I agree. It's just like applying new code to old structures. Old structures are fine as long as you don't try to renovate them (in which case it can be grievously expensive to get up to code). Historical buildings are exempt.
