Starting with free speech as a principle, the only reasonable restrictions are those that can be directly linked to actual harm which already is codified in law. Hate speech is a power play, proponents of it seek to use it as a bludgeon to silence dissenting views.

The problem is that leftists act like the worst of women - "I know this guy's violent history, but it will be different with me. My sex / love / personality will fix him!" That's a good way to end up dead and a statistic whether at the hands of an abusive boyfriend or government.
