The philosophical principles are quite simple – freedom of association is a basic right, and it harms your happiness to continually subject yourself to needless abuse. I don’t accept that anyone has a right to your time and attention - particularly abusers.

I don't know why this is at all controversial. Separating yourself from any abusive person is a good idea, whether you share DNA and a last name with them or not.

Separation from an abusive mother as soon as it was safe to do so doubtless saved my sanity, and frankly may have saved my life.

I'm only going to say that those hurt little children grow up and have to live with more then just hurt - anger, shame, and a milieu of other emotions. Therapy doesn't always heal the deepest of wounds. There are no words that can repair what was inflicted.

Well, also remember, that it's ok to feel, now. It's ok to cry. But, whatever happened, whatever was, was. You can't change it, but you can get your control back. You can fight back by not letting it shape you except to make you a better person. Just a thought...
