Slavery by both Americans and our European ancestors lasted for 400 years. Americans continued the practice long after our European forebears discontinued it. Most Southern states and our police force still treat African Americans as second class citizens in 2019.

Don't forget that many US states banned slavery in their own state constitutions within a decade of Independence with even some states banning slavery BEFORE they had even joined the US (Vermont).

Slavery is alive and well. A bit rebranded, but the notion of aquiring foriegners for below poverty wage, indefinitely, is stronger than ever. Turns out the issue wasn't slavery at all. It was that the public preferred slavery with emotional sprinkles.
