True story: Overheard a painter tell another about a homeless man and asked if he needed work. The man took up the offer. One day led to another. One job to another. Former homeless man now is sober, has an apartment, and is a painting contractor.

Talking to a homeless person won't fix their lives. Our society failed them and sent them on the streets to beg. Billionaires could easily end world hunger and still be in the top 1% without any lifestyle adjustments. Greed is killing the world.
-
Don't try to fix their lives but treating someone like a person is a good first step. We dehumanize them and that definitely doesn't help anyone, including us.

When one speaks to the poor, one gains a view of society that is at once more realistic and visceral than what we're fed. One sees the desperation in which most people live. One sees the wolf prowling the precincts.

I find it so strange to run to government, most amish people are ss exempt which means they cant ever partake in gov programs, guess who takes care of the widows and single moms if need be?the church,we were raised to NEVER trust government
-
How/why are Amish SS exempt?
-
And they have their own healthcare and if someone has medical bills they cant pay,all the amish across the US pitch in to help,it works for them i guess
-
Interesting, thanks for the info

I like a John Stossel quote I heard once... charities use to know when a person needed help or when they needed a kick in the ass. Government has no ability to do that.

Government/state are words used by libertarians to create a disconnect in democracy, all the things that government/states manage, public services etc are owned by the public, they are are our invested assets, we have pooled our resources to ensure a fairer, equal and better 1/2

That's a truly naive assessment. Such a complex issue. Making it a simple mockery reminds me of GOP incompetence and self-righteousness. What if born into a bad situation with no one to turn to? No access to mental healthcare, or was abused? A system that favors wealth and greed
-
Read the story I just posted. No government intervention. Just one man offering a hand to another.

It depends on the person...they are not all the same. Some are users and some are legitimately down on their luck. Talking to them helps you know immediately. If they don't show up to work that is usually a good indicator...and you could always fire them.

Why should anyone help their fellow man, when they can pay the government to do it for them? After all, there is no seat more comfortable than the throne of apathy.
