Not trying to be snarky here. In Zen they teach that the world we see and experience is a mirror of our inner world. You can play around with this by changing your thinking. You may be surprised after a time.

One could ask what's cause and what's effect, but I was abandoned as an infant by my father, and abused by my mother, so this pattern predates my conscious self.

Then you could ask if I could now consciously break this pattern, but even if so, I'll know the capacity people have for bad behavior, even if I would see it less.

I think you’re right—you are keenly aware of the capacity people have for heartlessness. In line with my Zen comment, we do subjectively experience the abuse, but as the One Body, we experience the abusing too. Doesn’t take the pain away, though.
