I spent the first several paychecks I made working the garbage truck (4am every morning) on a second hand Commodore Pet 2k as a HS freshman. Wrote a typing tutor and centipede clone in Commodore BASIC. Good times.

Well it's not really like that. Most programming languages follow established conventions. Something as simple as if(1==0) will work on C, C++,C#,Java,Python, JavaScript,PHP and many more languages.

I work with Financial Software. I had an old boss who told me the way to train people would be to grab them when they are teenagers. I would have had 10 years applicable experience at 25 years old, as it is I had 10 years experience at 35. Defund University

It can be self taught, I am terrible with that, but my brother self taught C++, and excellent in that. Too bad mom doesn’t think computer is the future, he got roped into medical field!

I thought that programming was easy too, until I tried to teach it to some other people and discovered that what was easy for me wasn't so easy for everyone else. For those who think that it is easy to learn to code I suggest they try teaching to other people.

I started learning code later in life. What really helped me was working on a personal project that I cared about.

I was 13, using a Wang 4400 and then a Wang 2200 BASIC system with 2k and then 4K or RAM each. Those were the days. Now Chrome takes up 2GB of memory just to serve me web ads I don’t want to look at.
