Stephan, wasn’t ostracism abused in Athens by crafty but empty headed shills like Alcibiades to eliminate their opponents?

Think ostracism an attack also

Taken together, both are more effective than either alone. On occasion, attack is called for.

I say teasing and shaming are the way to go about it. Ostracizing is literally ending the conversation. There may be times when someone needs to resort to "tough love," but for the most part its a last resort of sorts. I don't mind telling a fool why hes foolish.

Ostracism and shaming aren't arguments.

But both are necessary for shaping your community.

Both are attack. To banish or shun is not passive.

i disagree. ostracization can be a very harmful attack against an individual and more insidious than an obvious attack because it looks and feels passive to those engaging in the behavior.

The only thing that every person owes every other person is non-aggression, not association. That's damn good reason for shity people to reform and be better. Otherwise they will find themselves alone in the cold and wild or only surrounded by other shity people.
