People forget the "time" element. Monopolies proper are legally enforced and cannot easily overcome. Market monopolies are temporary at best and usually unstable.

If it's longer than the working life of an average worker I'd call that pretty permanent.

Trying to think of a good monopoly example. The US had a monopoly on Nuclear Weapons for a bit in the 40s. Don't see how libertarian ideas could have stopped them if they wanted to use nukes to keep that monopoly.
