Well, states were quite willing to crack down on it before, like in 19th century Germany when a revolution was stirring. But then as now, people were actually using their speech to protest. Times like these put our principles to the test and the result is alas not good...

Disagree. The left never wanted people to have free speech. The vehicle (internet) makes no difference. I will always want free speech whether internet, cable lines, or smoke signals.

There is also the argument that it was only ever a military operation to spy on and mark those who were still awake ready for the end game operation currently underway. A giant facebook.
