In Britain, single mothers got massive welfare benefits from the 1970s onwards. The illegitimacy birth rate had stayed at about 5% of births for 400 years. It began to increase in the 70s–32% in 1991, currently around 50%. Government welfare is an acid that dissolves families.

The other factors that also took off around the same time are the 'free love' idea thanks to birth control, the softening of Christian legislation around marriage, sex, abortion etc (Vatican II too), legalization of no fault divorce ...the list goes on! Hard to isolate welfare.

It’s actually feminism that caused govt welfare. Govt welfare is the issue on top of the issue.

@RationalMale This is an example of how women enabled govt to turn men into draft animals.

Milton Friedman was always happy to explain to people that anytime you subsidize something, you get more of it. How anyone does not understand that simple fact is a mystery to me.

That’s because they’ve been told it’s like a Swiss watch. You can easily take it apart, and put it back together again any way you want, and it will still work just the same.

I agree. Cut welfare. We should have workhouses. People get a roof, shelter and a job paid at a pocket money rate. No more fistfulls of cash for huge families. I do not expect to work full time to support other people's lifestyle choices whilst they doss at home hungover.

Define massive in 1970 terms....................Family allowance was only granted for the first child in 1977 it was £4 per week..............The "single" mother label is disingenuous as all unmarried women fall into that category pre-1991.

In South Africa, unemployed mothers (>50%) monthly get ridiculously small welfare grants for each of their children, so now they've started popping out babies, one after another, from the age of as low as 13, so they can get their hands on some "free" cash. Ain't Socialism grand?

Everyones so worried about trying to satisfy women who could be treated like royalty and still complain. No one cares about the colleteral damage known as the children of feminism who dont have a voice.

We need more support for families, people aren’t paying attention to the social costs from problem adolescents caused by single family homes. And that’s not a knock on single parents, raising kids can be hard enough with two parents

In America, you can directly link this to the decline in the black community and even the white one today. This pattern of government intervention is better than random and can be observed around the globe. It has undoubtedly helped in the decline of the family unit.

That's true. When I was on government allowance I would see which political party would give me the best benefits. It was the lack of freedom associated with those benefits that got me off them.
