False, core science (in the STEM area) is long term with unknown outcomes. A customer driven model would not work.

Imagine twenty people that spent decades investigating the same thing with no results, and now they all peer review each other's work so they can continue to acquire funding.

All scientists should have to share their discoveries with the world or use them only for themselves. Science shouldn't be up for bids to the highest bidders who want to keep it secret for secret reasons.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmgOLl1vIQQ …

Companies already contribute to basic scientific research. Absent the tax burden there is no reason it wouldn’t increase.

There may be a handful of true collective action solutions into which government should invest scientific funding. It all comes down to the game theory. Maybe we should watch out for asteroids? But on the whole, scientific funding has had a negative ROI these past decades.

And if you take out the Human Genome Project, it's a very negative ROI.

Though national defense may be a reasonable target for subsidization in a world in which some threats are real. If we got rid of all the unnecessary spending, including large swaths of defense that doesn't matter, what would remain would feel small and manageable.

1. Not all research results in a product that people consume 2. People will opt out of paying for things even if society needs it 3. How does research get funding in your insane mind? Do you think researchers should advertise to laymen to find money or something? Youre nonsense

Isn’t that how we got global warming? Scientists “paid by the government to” reach a predetermined outcome for their customer?

Capitalism tends to follow path of least resistance - maximizing profit while minimizing risk. It will, generally, not invest hugely in uncertain outcomes. Capitalism will not invent a cellphone, it will make the cellphone refined and convenient once it is invented.

I wish I could see a country like that. I guess there is one somewhere, on the same planet with a real socialist one. Planet Unicorn.

How about when something is needed but unprofitable? For example the cancer fighting drug discovered a decade ago by Canadian researches, but no company would fund the R&D because the drug was unable to be patented.
