There’s an endless amount of handwringing about the “crisis of replication” in mostly government-funded “science.” Socialism never works, and peer review is the substitution of in-group cliques for free market discipline.

There is a reason Einstein had a disdain for the peer review process. Valid ideas (the truth) will survive the Darwinian process of scientific scrutiny over time. The measurement of the charge of the electron is a fine example. Millikan's oil drop experiment got it wrong.

I'd say it depends on the field of study. In mathematics there is a subjective judgement -- is the result interesting and nontrivial? -- but mainly it's a matter of checking a proof to make sure it doesn't have errors. Peer review works pretty well in mathematics.

Out of fairness,
@Belletheboi does have a point. -
The only thing worse than having the peer review process is not having it.

Peer Review has been for a long time. Most studies, public or private, seek one thing: attention, either to get more funding for the research so that they can keep their job or for business. So, the only studies that reach the people is political or commercial propaganda.

This is like damning capitalism as just a way for greedy people to make $$$. It's the feature, not the bug. Likewise the reason academics publish....
