A virtue must be chosen, which means that compulsion to “help” the poor is a sin. The welfare state – and imperialism – violates “thou shalt not steal.”

God never said to force others to contribute or be charitable. He said it is good if YOU do. I think the best charity is free market and abolishing income and property tax.

You're forgetting the whole "give unto Caesar" thing. You don't have to agree with it, but there was no supply-side Jesus who'd oppose the state levying taxes to support the poor and infirm.

I love this. Virtue is a matter of conscious responsibility and not mere instinct. Understanding is charitable and virtuous; giving things to those who dubiously claim need is ignorance predicated upon the instinct to help the archetypal wounded, and therefore selfish.
