Denmark was the first country to abolish slavery and stand unequivocally for the freedom of people of other races, doing so on purely philosophical grounds. The UK followed a generation later, and the USA two generations later.

Common law always provided wonderful protections to those who understood common law - i.e., "persons" who were able to stand their ground. Not being thusly "competent" rendered you a non-person, a child and an "object", not a "subject". CL was in no way incompatible with slavery.

I've heard something like this before, and it sounds plausible. However, my guess is that it was done with good intentions and the fallout was accidental--they probably guessed single mothers needed the money more, not seeing that this created a perverse incentive.

"nowhere in the world was slavery a controversial issue prior to the 18th century" - Wrong. Incorrect. Also known as buuullshit! France abolished domestic slavery in 1315. This upset French colonialists. That made it, quite clearly, a CONTROVERSIAL ISSUE https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abolitionism …

Dr. Sowell also wrote an entire book attributing today's black culture of being 'ghetto' to British influence. Mimicking the low class ways of the Scottish Highlands, the Irish, and Welsh. Depending on your agenda u can always cite a Sowell theory. He is the horse of many colors
