I believe that when people think of slavery they have an image of white men running through the jungle with nets, like a scene from Planet if the Apes. Africans have been killing each over possessions or women for centuries. They still do.
And the French supported the American Revolution because they too were against Monarchies.
Give me a break.
There would be no supply without the demand.
And before Europeans showed up, the slaves went many other places. Other African tribes, the Islamic world, etc. When Europeans stopped buying, they used their navy's to crush the trade anywhere they could. Black slaves are still used and sold in Africa and the Middle East.
WHEN THEY STOPPED BUYING...Hmmmm
Hmmm indeed...
Not only did blacks traffik slaves, it was a major part of the economy. The only thing that stopped it? Those 'evil' European imperialists. :)
For there to be a trade, there must be buyers and sellers. To say that the sellers somehow outweigh the buyers in wrongdoing simply ignorance. Especially since the buyers continued the trade in their colonies, using everything from religion to pure belittlement to maintain it.
I think everyone actuallys knows that fact.
The whole concept of "whites vs blacks," or "whites vs Indians" is modern. They were more concerned with tribal affiliation or nationality than race as a whole. British had indigenous allies against the French, and vice versa.
If we decide a segment of the population is not held as accountable as others, this in effect is determining that such people do not have the capacity to be responsible for their action. We treat children in this manner and it's racist to think of Blacks as not fully developed.
Thank you for your different point of view
Slavery was written into the US Constitution - the 3/5's rule, and 11 states committed treason against the US in the 19th century in order to preserve it.pic.twitter.com/KYPlPnDoBz
The 3/5 compromise was the only way to pass the Constitution in the first place. We wouldn’t have a nation otherwise. Yes it’s deplorable, but the alternative would’ve been even worse.
Worse than having no nation at all? Then slavery would likely still exist in the Southern states, which wouldn’t even be called “states” since the Union would never have been formed. Northern pressures ended slavery eventually. The 3/5 comp was unfortunate but necessary.
