What was your first job?

I painted commemorative plaques for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977, when I was 10.
-
Cool. My first job was in the local chippy peeling tatties. Done that for about two years until I started working with my dad as a heating engineer, been doing it ever since. Thanks for replying btw.

-
can you translate the first sentence of that tweet into American English lmfao
-
Of course lol. Chippy is a fish and chips shop and tatties are potatoes.

-
Thanks brotha!! I genuinely prefer the UK way of saying it to the American - yours is fun lol.

Indeed. And, If you work outside in the winter, you will know that the cold weather does not care about you, or your ideologies or give you special treatment Cold weather teaches you respect for reality

That’s one of this country’s problems is we have too many people who have never had a real job or run/managed a successful company trying to make policy decisions for the rest of us hard working Americans.

Sometimes. I know several folks who only do manual labor that are seduced by the notion that markets never work and are always inherently unfair. There is an attraction to philosophy that always blames an invisible hand of unfairness for one’s lot in life.
-
There are a few but they are the exception in my experience. I worked lots of labor jobs, and the type of IT/Telco work I do now keeps me in contact with lots of construction workers and they mostly bitch about the gov stealing half their paycheck and giving back little / nothing

I think certain Catholic contemplative religious orders mandate their members do 1 hour's manual labour each day (usually agricultural). It's to keep them grounded.

I work two jobs, I'm an Engineer and a grocery clerk. One job exercises the mind, the other exercises the body. Success takes work. Nothing good ever comes easy or free.

I'm a commercial heating and cooling mechanic which can be brutally humbling at times. I accept / love objective reality and the free market so your statement rings true to me

I have not done manual labour yet. That said, I try to accept objective reality and the free market. I have seen what happens when people don't. I have been won over to such positions by observation and argument, not manual labour.

I’m not looking over my back for some rich guy, I’m looking over my back for the tax man or some other bureaucratic parasite with their rules and regulations.
