I don't know if I buy the idea that it didn't exist, but I'd say it probably wasn't as pronounced or common as it is now. But surely there were milquetoast guys 50 years ago that couldn't get it together and succumbed to this as well.

Spot on. But might i add another part. The women gets pregnant by the bad boy, the bad boy leaves, then the "friend zone" guy gets the "pleasure" of being with her and taking care of the bad boys kid.
