To be fair people had a lot of kids back then, and the army and monastery were the only thing to do with all those extra kids. Unless you get rid of primogeniture, which usually was a disaster.

For centuries monasteries kept the remains of the Roman civilization cultural assets away from barbarians in the Middle Ages,that's why the priests & nuns enjoyed more education than the average. Aristocrats were illeterate, actually considered was bad mannered to be literate.

It would be a good exercise to recall the main names of the Renaissance, Da Vinci, Michelangelo, etc. None of them belonged to wealthy or aristocrat breeds, but the wealthiest gave these poor kids the benefit of a home full of opportunities. Aristocrats & Rich were no genius!
