Our combined ideas ended up with a big sheet of paper,with a scale or squares and we used these little glass counters I had from some other game to represent characters/creatures. It was a bit crude but with some imagination and bit of 'spot rules' we made due.

Our party was once approaching a tower of refugees escaping zombies that had overtaken the landscape. The guard yells out to us asking who we are. The joker in our party playing the druid yells "yaaarrrggg"
