People who grew up in a home with more books, grow up to achieve higher socioeconomic status. Lets give all kids a 1000 books and there will be no under class.

Library cards are free. More important is a culture of learning. Can't magically impart that.

We need a new ladder system within trade skills and palpable skills. One which allows for continuous progression without the insane front loading of debts. Almost like the old Apprentice system, but new. It wouldn't be hard to implement, but would piss off the Bachelor profiteers

I have clients from places like Hungary and they usually have high school graduation certificates in carpentry and masonry, etc.
-
Those are great! I think it needs to go a bit further than that. Not just High School level, but beyond. Some technicians are better equipped to design and manufacture items than engineers because of their experience. They are blocked from those jobs because of the degree system!

It’s also like “more students makes us (the board of the university) richer, so let’s go international and deliver a worthless diploma to everyone who stays and pays a few years in our university”.

Not everyone either wants or needs college. Here is a great article from Mike Rowe on the huge gap in folks learning skilled trades jobs that pay as much or more than college graduates get.https://www.forbes.com/sites/kathycaprino/2018/08/30/dirtiest-man-on-tv-mike-rowe-takes-on-americas-skills-gap-problem/#366789d06da5 …

Universities are businesses. The more people they get to enroll, the more money they get for research and athletics. It’s up to the student to choose a responsible major that leads to a lucrative job post-graduation.
-
They are a business that is very fond of talking about how they're not a business. "Oh, education isn't about making money, so you should give us more money, because hey it's just money, please give us more of it though."
-
It is what it is. To exist is to pay money into some sort of a system. The good thing is you can elevate your social status by getting a degree if you’re smart about which degree you choose.

I suppose the theory is that increasing the human capital of people will help them earn more... but yeah, all we got was baristas with communications degrees.

They make more money because university has become a cult. If you’re not a member of the cult then the worthless HR dept won’t consider you a valid candidate, regardless of IQ or ability. (Probably b/c smart, poor people are terrifying to rich people and fear competition)
-
And, of course, they become more fearful as the smart poor people become successful as the years pass, and surpass those companies. But, never do they think they should've hired their talent twenty years ago.

Don’t forget the limousines. We all could cruise around in big cars. I could use a limo and driver.
