They’re basically loan sharks preying on the young, as well as the historical value of a university degree. In the past, few people went to University, so it had good value as a mark of high intelligence – now, they just stuff everyone in there, so everything is dumbed down.https://twitter.com/AK49AT/status/1084293371705901056 …

My mom is 69. She is still being harassed over student loans from 35 years ago, when she went back to get her degree. They are threatening to take it out of her Social Security check. It's f-ing ridiculous. 😡😡😡😡

C'mon man - where is the personal responsibility? Take a loan, pay it off. Don't double down on grabbing a masters in public administration if you can't get a role. It is pretty simple.

Agreed. Failure to educate young people, and a lack of life experience. Being misled into a degree which leads nowhere but debt is a huge issue.

? This is supposed to make me feel bad? Get a loan you pay it back. Pretty simple concept.

The idea is to get a degree and then seek employment commensurate with the degree. It's fine if you end up being a lawyer or a doctor, or an engineer or some other high-earning profession. The issue is the humanities. They lead nowhere.

Under Barack Obama, college degrees became frightfully expensive, and he passed laws to have the U.S. government take over all the student loans. Laws were passed to make them not voidable even by bankruptcy. We need to change this so that people can live.

I kind of agree with that, but people really need to decide if paying for schooling takes 25 years of your career is it really worth it?

Absolutely. A degree may not be necessary if you have skills and knowledge, however you acquire them.

Good news was, she actually earned a worthwhile degree. Bad news was, she had 5 kids at home so never had quite enough to pay them off. She does still make payments each month 🤷‍♀️

Very true. Many have a short view of history. My lack of advanced degree has never hold me back. Business wants me because of what they know I can do. Tech titans are realising the CS student mill, turning one cookie-cutter student after another, is not worth considering.

My high school guidance counselor had a poster on her door that read: "The College Degree: Your ticket to a million dollars. College graduates earn 1m dollars more over a lifetime than high school graduates."

The value of a degree is determined by market forces. The error was not that higher education became available to everyone, but that there was less emphasis placed on field of study.

Now kids have to get Master’s degrees and PhD’s to get the signaling value that a B.A. once conferred. That’s one reason student debt has risen.

And by dumbing down the Universities, it shoos high intelligence people away. Opening the floodgates in Academia is the main reason why we are struggling to make great scientific discoveries.

So mom thought she wouldn't pay her debts & get away with it? I know someone else who had this happen to. They thought they would never have to pay the loan back. Boo Hoo.....
