Being 'repelled' by an argument is not a sufficient counter argument. Why should one be indebted to the "perception of others" rather than one's own conscience?

Well sure but I dont see how that would make him his worst enemy? He would be his worst enemy if he caved. Defeated, unsatisfied. Socrate's goal was not to be likeable but simply to get people thinking.

I dont see what your point is. Every philosopher in history has had masses repulsed by their ideas but their literature and contribution to wider discussions are remembered to this day, again being likeable and being inquisitive dont necessarily need to go hand in hand.
