I think a lot of atheists could be described as "midwits" who are just intelligent enough to know that god isn't real, but not smart enough to realize that the state isn't a valid replacement. Unfortunately there are just a lot more of them than there are of us.

I have seen wild dogs arrive at a conclusion similar to the universal "ethic of reciprocity" or as Christians call it, the Golden Rule. They circle each other and snarl, and then go about their business. "Don't bit me, I don't bit you, okay?" The golden nugget of Christianity.
