It’s not consensus that drives science, but conformity between hypothesis and empirical data.https://twitter.com/Jewthulhu/status/1082125615229071361 …

Today I learned: The Earth was actually flat until the 17th century, and then became a sphere when scientific consensus changed.

Naive people think the scientific method is about forming a hypothesis, and then proving that hypothesis "correct" through experimental results. The scientific method is actually about trying to *disprove* your hypothesis...through all means necessary...and failing to

Consensus is how bad policy gets out of committee. Cannot be overstated how inimical to science it is.

Consensus among credible people (scientists/intellectuals) who've studied the data and reach generally similar conclusion is how an hypothesis becomes de-facto a fact.

No. Successful prediction and repeatability is how hypotheses become theories and eventually laws. Facts are subordinate to scientific method.

have you ever heard of replicability? if a single experiment comports with your hypothesis but no-one can replicate it, it's not sound science. so in that sense, consensus absolutley is the driver of science. this is basic stuff.

There's no Platonic form out there called Science, it is nothing more than the activities and beliefs of collective scientists. Paychecks, ego, reputation etc drive "science' as much as anything does.

Interesting how conformity can (and is) coerced by the pro AGW crowd via their control over who gets to speak at conferences, allowed to publish, & who gets funding. Aside from all that, yeah, climate science, is a totally level playing field for the marketplace of ideas. 🙄

Agreed! Consensus is defined as a majority of opinion. It has nothing to do with scientific method. If consensus is scientific proof, then, I can scientifically prove the existence of God simply by asking everyone attending church on Sunday.
