Also, I've wondered about elephants, whales and other large animals who have more brain mass than humans but haven't achieved our same level of consciousness and complexity of thought. At least, as we've defined it, conveniently pacing ourselves at the top of that hierarchy. lol

Yes, precisely my point. There's no correlation between brain size and intelligence across species. So the mechanism for complex thought is not wed to area, necessarily. Of course, human males have bigger brains, more neurons firing, more male geniuses, so there is a connection.

It's almost as if there's some additional component to human existence that is not physically observable, what might one call this?

According to John Wooden, quickness is one: “The most important attribute in any sport is quickness. Quickness must be under control. If it isn't under control, you have a lot of activity without achievement. Giraffes not quick off the dribble.

Seems like there’s something more than evolution at play here. Hmmm.

The brain is way more complex than just "mass", our brains have several folds that extent our cerebral cortex and give us our capacity, functionality and adaptability. How did we developed that in about 2 to 3 billion years only god knows, it's was a complex evolutionary jump.

A mere blinking in the whole age of this planet yet we became the apex species, I'd like to find out how that happened to us when there were several other species before us that could have made that jump. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyrification …
