We need the state to reign into capitalism. Capitalism is revolutionary, and is destroying the family. It first destroyed the extended family to form the nuclear family of the 50's, and then it is destroying it to promote the homo economicus, without links to nation or family.

Families are very efficient. You get together young, invest heavily in your children, and they become morally excellent, productive members of society in no time. The idea that divorce, consumerism, gender conflict is efficient without the state subsidizing it is nonsense.

Imagine thinking that the deep social, cultural, and spiritual crises afflicting the West can be reduced down to the welfare state.

Yes, however, if the state fails to provide a safety net this void will be filled by religious extremists. Case in point the Islamic world.

Both the welfare state and capitalism! This argument is the political equivalent of Nurture v Nature, and some heads need to be banged together.

I think to many people capitalism is cognate with materialism, when the Welfare state is also synonymous.

There is a point where ignorance is so profound, so engaged, that dialog and understanding are impossible.
