Enslavement of Europeans was common during the Roman Empire. In fact, the majority of slaves in ancient Rome were from European vassal states.

Well, we could talk about the Ottoman Empire as well, which had a practice called Devshirme (Blood Tax) , between the 14th and 18th Century, where they would take Christian boys aged 8 - 18 from their families, from Eastern and Southeastern Europe, convert them to Islam..
-
To fight for them, notably into the Janissaries. Would get them in the front line, so they wouldn't lose any of their own. Tortured and treated like slaves.

Doesn't make things necessarily any better, though. Mental torture may sometimes cause even more damage than the physical one.

Hungary had an almost 150 years slavery during the Ottoman (Turkish) Empire. Somehow we always had trouble with muslim invasion throughout history.

Not a single reference from Stephen as usual. We are just to take his word for EVERYTHING.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbary_slave_trade … Numerically far less but far from insignificant and has been completely eroded from most history books as it doesn't fit the "white privilege" narrative. Most working class British were not slaves but were still exploited and led desperate wretched lives.

Do you have a citation for that?

Something like 3 million white slaves taken by the Tatars https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tatar_slave_raids_in_East_Slavic_lands … Another million taken by the Barbary pirates. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbary_slave_trade … Vs. well under a million African slaves brought to North Americahttps://www.pbs.org/wnet/african-americans-many-rivers-to-cross/history/how-many-slaves-landed-in-the-us/ …
-
Just curious: if only 388,000 Africans were sent directly to North America and the Caribbean islands, what happened to the other 10.7 million who survived the passage according to this database? Did you see any info on this?
-
No, that doesn’t include the Caribbean. Millions were sent there and to South America, Brazil mostly.
-
Thanks for the clarification. Still, an illuminating set of statistics!

(Sub Saharan) Africa never even invented the wheel, so not much chance of the industrial revolution happening there.
