I think the question is who held this person as a baby?

1. It's true , I'm not a parent. 2. I didn't say parenting is selfish. I agree with you 100% that parenting IS one of the least selfish things you can do with your life. I said that needing your "own" biological child is selfish but it's more narcissistic than selfish.

As a son, I confirm this as true.

Depends how you specifically frame the word parenting and what you think it entails so I will have to disagree and say parenting can also be done for selfish reasons. We see the result of it all the time. Not all parenting is equal.

There's a biological urge to reproduce, but that's more to do with maternal/paternal instincts & continuation of the species than narcissistic - wonder if his parents are on twitter!
-
He's half right, whilst there's little narcissism in it, to replicate is the sole purpose of any organism
-
I like to think love of children might come into it somewhere along the line - given we are all now out of caves and down from trees.
-
But is it programmed in our DNA?
-
Or is it learned behaviour, I think this is most likely, as it also explains when the care of a child is inadequate

I agree that parenting is selfless. However shaming people for not wanting kids is only going to lead to people having them out of a desire to conform and fit in: an inherently selfish reason
-
And one which will naturally lead to poor parenting. Just respect that some people don't want kids. I don't and I'm so happy that in modern society, it's not necessarily expected of me. It would be nice if others could drop the shaming though. We don't all want the same lives.

Hmm nah the guy has a point, as well as the obvious necessity that people need to have children for humans to continue, it's also true that people often want mini-me's to prop up their ego. Not many people have kids to continue the species; there are billions of us after all.

And I'd wager this one doesn't hold their parents in such a good light either.

Many fathers who are honest hardworking men and who love their wives would disagree wit this person.

Having a child and being a parent can be two completely different things.
