I was treated to a performance of Pride and Prejudice last year in Seattle with a black Mr. Darcy. I didn't bother bringing up the historical inaccuracy at dinner after because, you know, Seattle.
-
The BBC version is the ultimate Pride and Prejudice. Can't watch any other version.

White-washing London in the original Mary Poppins & many other movies does not mean that a remake using a multi-ethnic cast is some kind of false commie fantasy. Been POC in the UK since day dot.
-
The original was set in 1910, the sequel in 1935. There would have been people from the British colonies in the UK in both time periods. However, it’s possible that the areas the original was set in were lily white.
-
There have been sub-Saharan and North African people in Britain since Roman times. Thousands of African slaves were in London in the late 18th century. MP was set in London, possibly the least likely place in the UK to be "lily white" in early- to mid-20th c.
