If there is no such thing as free will, then there is no such thing as a preferred state, therefore there can be no such thing as “problematic.” If your argument can be defeated in a tweet, you’re probably in the wrong field.https://twitter.com/polychotomy/status/1076543547812311040 …

It seems problematic to base your philosophy on the vague unprovable idea of free will.

What? There can absolutely be a preferred state with no free will. A.I.s have preferred states, no free will, and can absolutely encounter problematic circumstances. Your chain of logic is bad. I mean it usually is, but this one is also bad.

That doesn't follow at all. There are preferred states - in fact our preferences are what determine our 'choices'. I was born to hate Marmite, so I 'choose' not to eat it, but my 'choice' is still predetermined. There's no contradiction between determinism and preferred states.

Quantum mechanics isn't a problem for determinism. It shows that sub-atomic events are determined by probabilities, but that's more of issue for a mechanistic view if the world.

That's you preference, and is hard wired into you either by your nature or your nurture, neither of which you control. Still it's a good preference to have, so all power to you, you made me smile ☺

"That's your preference, and is hard wired into you either by your nature or your nurture..." Could you explain what the "you" entity is the statement above? What is this "you" that has preferences, but is separate from its nature and nurture.

Christ no - I'm not getting to get into the philosophy of mind on twitter, that's a passport to hell! I will say that dualist or materialist it doesn't change the point that the decisions we make have causes which we don't control. Free will is a powerful and necessary illusion.

I think therefore I am, Freewill is one of those things that can only be proven to ones self, you can not prove the free will of others, but knowing that you yourself have free will is enough to suppose that others might too.

if they cannot understand the primal lizard brain, wth do they think they can understand the rational brain? what a bunch of dopes. they do try to push biological & conditioning, but ignore anything they cannot control. Free will exists because man is more than just an animal.

*biology as in sensory data input via life & conditioning determine outcome. Altruism contradicts it. ex: guy who recv burn on hands & neck to pull a person from a burning car; no relation, so no biological imperative to act, contrary to his own safety, it was just his will.
