Seems like you're missing entitlement spending. The biggest problem is we transfer money from young people to old people via SS and Medicaid. Subsidizing people who can't have children by having people who can have children pay for it is a terrible economic system.

I paid in to SS all of my life. Just write me a check for what I paid and I will be happy. There's a difference between giving $$ to people that have paid nothing.

That's exactly how it should be done. Put all SS into T-bills and give that back to the people who paid into it. Put Medicare/Medicaid payments into Health Savings Account and give it back. Let people decide how to spend their retirement money and healthcare.

When SS first started it was optional. Then it was supposed to go into a "lockbox" for later on. Then the gov. got greedy and started using it. Now each generation has to pay for the next. "W" tried to give some options, but of course it was blocked.

That's the problem, all of these groups are now well-heeled and financially invested in the status quo, so Bush couldn't do anything. It's a ponzi scheme, plain and simple. To keep funding it would require a birthrate of about 3.0 per person.
