You assume very wrong. My dad was a gambling addict. We were actually better off financially after he died. Even if he had left us life insurance instead of debt, it only stretches so far.
My sympathies to you and your mother – your mother was not a single mother, but a widow, which is an entirely different category. So a widow is ok but a mother who is single through no fault of her own way is not ok??? My mother also was a single parent from 1962 onwards after my father and she divorced and she had to leave the family home because she was no longer in the military. I was three years old.
