"they could have" ??? 5 minutes googling will tell you this is simply not true. Check labour laws by state or country. Your comment about post WW2 also ignores the fact that working class women have always worked, in whatever jobs they were permitted to.

Even more they entered university at the time. If a woman was dead set on ignoring normal and decided to live like a monk as most men do, then she was allowed to be treated like (not the same as) a man.
