Stefan, the U.S. economy will not allow a one-paycheck family to survive. In the 1960s my Dad was a blue collar guy who could still afford a nice home, six kids, a Catholic education for all, 2 vehicles, Mom stayed home and we never wanted for anything. IMPOSSIBLE now.
-
That's bull. The only reason that couples can't live on one income these days is because they insist on a *much* higher material standard of living than in the 50s and 60s.

I have a pet theory that women entering the workforce is the reason it now takes two salaries to survive. The workforce essentially doubled overnight, of course wages went down.

Doesn’t work anymore for most people as wages are less than ever in relation to living costs. You are an intellectually dishonest, blithely white-supremacist, old-school chauvinist, under-researched, backwards, deliberately obtuse, disingenuous knobcheese.
-
Callous, strident, and opinionated all seem like adjectives that could be used to describe you as well. Also, I know for a fact that a family can survive on one income, so baseless as well... I suppose if your income is from McDonalds or welfare, then you're right...

So I live in California (unfortunately). And my wife and I have to work full time jobs to be able to afford living here. How should we do it? We have no choice right now with our 8 month old.

As I said to another person, we are working on moving but we don’t do anything blindly. When I get a job where we want to move, I’ll go ahead of them and get set up and they will follow. But until then? I’m just curious, is it so bad, even if in the short term?
-
But, you're already on this path. You can only do what you can now, I think the point of his lectures is to reach people who haven't already started their family. But I am with you, I already raised one daughter in a broken home, I can only do my best to educate her now.
-
But in today’s economic climate in places like California. It’s just damn near impossible. My wife and I bring in around 125k and if we want to own a home or have her stay we would be saving no money. So it’s a catch 22. Plan for retirement, or own a home and have her stay.
-
I grew up in Lodi, my grandma and aunt still live in Stockton. I know just how terrible California is. I hope that you and your family make it out of there because you can't make it on one average salary in California. Good luck!

Trouble is, now that women have been working a while, our economy is built around a double income family unit. Single income families really struggle to survive and afford housing. I am one of those mothers that actually wants to be at home, and we're always skint as a result.
-
This is me. I would LOVE to be a housewife, believe me.

If you cant, teach your daughter to look for a man who can provide that. If you have a son teach him its his duty to provide that. Not a dig at your husband, just trying to help future generations.
-
There are few men that can provide that these days. Not because they have failed, but because the system is broken. The ones that could provide are usually arseholes. That's why they get ahead. I'd prefer to struggle with a good man than prosper with an arsehole. That's my lesson
-
I have yet to meet the person over 100 iq that couldnt spend 2 years solid of their life pushing 80 hour weeks to get there. Most just arent willing. If you already have kids, I get it. That requires him to be basically absent with them for like 2 years, but if you dont, he can.
-
There aren't enough working hours available for everyone to do that though. Most people these days in my area struggle to find 40 hours work a week. Things are changing. The world is not what it once was. Everything is "on demand" now. It's really sucky.
-
I mean, the economy is way up, if you cant get the hours at your normal job you can get a second job, or do side work. That's what I do when we get tight. If it takes an extra 8 hours a day flipping burgers, so be it
-
I have 3 jobs. I’m self employed.
