Every time you hear about Big Oil finding a climate change study, or in the past when tobacco companies funded research on the effects of smoking, the results are always assumed to be compromised.
Governments directly fund news agencies, though, and everything is A-OK!

You are equivocating governments with private corporations. This doesn't logically flow since corporations have a central goal of self-interest, but governments are designed to be aimed towards public good. Some corrupt and/or authoritarian governments would do this, but not all
-
Governments natural goal is to get bigger. Every head of a government department wants more funding.

I agree that governments have issues, but megacorporations having control over information and research can be far more harmful, as shown by this example
-
Doesn't refute Stephan's point that government control of news is bad
-
It does point out that the alternative to government funding of news media is control by megacorporations, which I contend is worse for the body politic
