Easy question. With our aging population and ever-increasing welfare state, we need a continually expanding revenue base. And the myth is that this will be provided by ever-increasing immigration, legal or otherwise. These days, that's crap, but that's the logic our leaders use.
If you have an aging population w/ more pensioners than people in the workforce, the system doesn't work. So maybe anti-immigration folks need to rally for later retirement age and smaller pension benefits? I agree though, open door policy for "asylum seekers" does not help $$
