The circumstances of his hiring of Mueller were grounds to fire him IMO. This story, if accurate (which you can never be certain with The NYT), only further supports that he should be fired.
If Rosenstein now says that he was joking about plotting a coup, he should be fired for thinking that a coup is a good subject for a joke.
