I used to work in an "open office." I called it "the spider monkey cage." Headphones with LOUD classical music helped.
-
The guy in the cubicle next to mine talked on the phone so much and so loudly I had to play The Ramones at max volume to even hear myself think. Nothing else worked. Years later, I’m suffering from tinnitus and hearing loss.

At one point I started blasting Armenian liturgical chant through my Mac's speakers....

It reminds me of how many times I tried to explain the guys in charge why this was a bad idea and got blatantly ignored.

How in the heck can you concentrate in one of these open plan offices. I guess that's what's causing the lower productivity.

No shit. Currently working for a company where all 3 of us engineers are in an "open plan" all lined up in a row where the boss can see anything on our PC screens at all times. We're never in the office anymore, preferring to work of-site at client locations as much as possible.

I have worked both. Open office is the worst idea ever. Thankfully I moved up enough in my career where I will never be in anything but my own office.

Open offices truly sucked! So many executives fell for the 'great for communication' BS & then spent a bunch of money tearing walls down. May it was collusion with general contractors?

Wow, I knew those terrible ideas had names that get passed around in business school, Stack Ranking and Consensus Management. It's like a Dilbert comic.

If democracy brought out the best in people, countries or companies, there would have been an election every 4 years to select a new CEO. Democracy is failing us.
