Democratic socialism combined with capitalism has made the Nordic countries objectively the most prosperous and some of the richest countries on the planet. So there's that.

It works there bc it’s an homogenous society. Not so most places. As someone else said, socialism works in theory, if no one goes against the grain. Oh and those countries also don’t spend money on defense.
-
The homogeneity of the society has nothing to do with it. The UK also has universal, tax-funded healthcare, among other things. So does France. By American standards both are socialist.
-
And defence spending? Sweden has one of the largest air forces in Europe. Finland has one of the largest armies in Europe after mobilization. Their combined population is approximately half the population of Texas.
-
the density and size of population comparativetely has a lot to do with it as well. america is too spread out for it to work.
-
Not a factor. See: Canada. Finland. Australia.

It's one of life's conundrums. Why is it that Socialism always works far better in theory than it ever does in practice?
-
Cause in theory people won't go against the grain, you have unlimited resources, and there are no unplanned for disasters. Everything is better in theory, if only we could all live in theory land instead of reality, we would be in the utopia of our dreams already.
-
Yes! About 15 years ago, I remember Lord Howe (Sir Geoffrey of Margaret Thatcher fame), explaining how it was perfectly feasible to have a joint currency (Euro) operating across several independent countries. Ask Greece, Italy etc., how well it works in practice.

Socialism looks good on paper but doesn't work in reality.
-
Socialism doesn’t even look good on paper. The idea of taking someone’s property and giving it to someone else by threat of gun is immoral.

Don't confuse social programs like Social Security, etc with socialism. Programs like that are actually capitalist in a sense. You see, we "pay" into social security, we "pay" taxes. We are in essence "buying" a commodity from the government albeit we don't have a choice.

Come on, you know all too well socialism includes public rather than private ownership or control of property and natural resources. The public in socialisms case really means the government. That's a lot of control over people.
