It’s time now to start looking forward.  On Monday, I will present a draft mandate for the negotiations with the . One thing is clear: the interests of 🇪🇺, of each and every Member State and of all our citizens come first.

What changes w/ tomorrow night? Mainly that UK leaves EU institutions, agencies & bodies, while UK keeps EU membership benefits & obligations until end of 2020. Importantly, there is now legal certainty (citizens, budget, Irish/NI border). See 👇

. - We now have an agreement that brings legal certainty. It would not have been possible without the work of everybody here in Ireland. Brexit really showed, we are all part of a family. Brexit will not go away. We have important work ahead of us.

The is leaving the EU 🇪🇺 next week. We have agreed a detailed Withdrawal Agreement which protects citizens’ rights, avoids a hard border on the island of Ireland & sets out a stand-still transition period until at least the end of 2020. Read more here:

You reflect on it as a high😀? I quoted you & others reacting to our 1st backstop text (“delusional”, “asinine”) & only said “words matter”. Per Seldon’s book May@10, our text came after a fierce debate in London decided not to table any UK text. We had to confront UK w/ choices.

“We will continue to defend the rights of our citizens. We will do everything in our power to ensure the full implementation of the Withdrawal Agreement.” Important statement by earlier today on citizens’ rights 👇

Time is short. 3 priorities stand out: building new channels of cooperation; a strong security partnership; a level playing field in our future economic relations w/ Never will it be the 🇪🇺 that fails on common ambition. My speech :

In London, & I met & looked at the year ahead: negotiating a new partnership but, as the President said , it will not be as close as now. Time is short. A new ⏰ is ticking. Our focus = implementing the WA & preparing negotiations on EU side.

EU is ready to work day and night & design a new partnership w/ zero tariffs, zero quotas, zero dumping. Unprecedented in scope. But it cannot be the same & as close as before: choice for has consequences. With every decision comes a trade-off

United EU protected one member (Ireland) & citizens. Honours financial obligations. Agreed UK ask of transition period. That’s orderly & paves way for new partnership (as close as possible, respecting EU principles). UK rejected customs union. “Victor’s justice” by EU?🤷‍♂️

This is exciting actually, for various reasons, one of them being the combination of EU policy & money, national budgets and the EU's global influence in a strategy for a green new deal.

It seems to me that the PM of one Member State is missing on this 2007 picture at the occasion of the Treaty signature.

Some quotes 2017-19: EU will negotiate in friendly & fair way. Brexit is not the future of Europe. Ireland first. UK will never be an ordinary 3rd country. No emotional attachment to backstop. (On leaving office) I had enough Brexit in my life 😀 Villmols merci

A reminder that state aid expenditure as % of GDP is relatively low in the UK compared to EU average & lower than in France or Germany.

In Zagreb said the EU never lost sight of its core interest & showed solidarity w/ Ireland. What always mattered most is the people of NI & Ireland. An orderly is not a destination but a stage to a more important task on the future:
