    The predictive text function in Gmail always suggests that I write more than I actually plan to. There should be an opposite function for subtitlers. One that condenses and rips out unnecessary words.

    Plus, quality are not that tiring

    "For many, the subtitle barrier is more than an inch tall. It requires you to focus on the bottom of the screen, meaning you may miss key visuals." If the subs are well-timed, well-spotted, well-written and concise, then no, you don't.

    Still, appreciated his comment that the actors' "body language and expressions are truly the universal language". It's something that experienced always have in mind, as their words interact with the image and the sound (complementarity, redundancy among AV elements)

    It would be interesting to see what kind of errors viewers point out through that feedback button. Their guess is "Missing , hard to read, not matched with sound, misspellings, or poor translations". I wonder if the list is in order of importance.

    Punctuation's important for comprehension (esp. re timed text) so it's often discussed among practitioners & dealt with in guidelines. But it rarely gets attention by viewers or researchers -only know of M.N.Guillot's excellent papers. Interesting discussion👇

    During my first year, I had a part-time job outside interpreting that covered the rent and my health insurance. If it's possible to find a job like that, it takes the pressure away. I'd never recommend going down on rates because it's incredibly hard to recover from that.

    The *way* the subtitling process is affected might not be that obvious to people outside. E.g. that some take longer to deliver sensitive content. I know I took extra breaks today to deal with scenes involving cannibalism, so the findings do resonate

    But if performance is not measured, eg. by productivity, or some agreed quality metric (always subjective to some degree) conclusion is obvious, right? Some people get upset and think it affects them, others don’t.

    Interesting insight in Italicising foreign words, which is a standard in certain contexts as well.

    The idea that helps multitasking is nothing new. Latin American soaps, very popular in Greece in the '90s, were dubbed so that "housewives, the target audience, could do the ironing while watching". That low quality dubbing became a laughing stock and was soon abandoned
