Science is so personal. When we reference a piece of evidence, we use the authors' names. Whole fields are intimately linked to certain scientists, sometimes even named after them. If a scientist says "it turns out my hypothesis was wrong" people hear "the scientist was wrong."

I would go with imposter syndrome and incentive structure. Science doesn’t come first, ego and status does. I hear the word “brilliant” used too often to discuss others ideas bereft of solid empirical work—so, have to keep up facade.
