It does not work - setting does not persist nor affects search output.

Hmmm....what is the status in the settings app showing? If it says there are items in the pending queue that could mean it hasn't finished the indexing pass yet. If there is nothing in the queue, file feedback under Cortana and Search --> Find My Files and send me the link

It says 'Indexing complete'. Pending: 0 I can't file feedback since Feedback Hub insists to sign it yet sign in dialog shows I'm already signed in.

When you enabled enhanced mode, is the reg key: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Search\Gather\Windows\SystemIndex\EnableFindMyFiles set to 1?
