So surely the joke can’t hinge on the depiction of this appearance as an absurd caricature...the “shock” would just be in someone pulling the same “joke” again in 2019

I dont think shock is what you are attempting to derive from absurdity. Absurd things are just amusing, so long as they are close enough to something real to have some reality. But there is a meta element which I wrote of in my other tweets.

Of course the people who are asking you to explain are really just making the point that the only real joke here is "Chinese people look funny". If you don't believe that then you won't find this "joke" funny.

That's not the joke, the joke is the absurd caricature and the other things I mentioned. He caricatured 5 different cultures. Including the british.

The "absurd character" is a well established racist stereotype.

A caricature. Similar to any caricature.

Yes but caricatures carry racial and nationalist themes which are loaded with bigotry and xenophobia.

Not necessarily. You are making that insinuation. My point is that you can mock and caricature without sincerely believing someone is inferior to you. But as you said before you believe humour must have criticism in it, which I do not believe. So we disagree on this point.

Mocking literally means that you think something is inferior. The humor that Crowder is "attempting" is to juxtapose those of different nationalities/races with "normal" people (white americans) through implication.

Making fun out of something is not a claim that it is inferior. Do you think people who make self deprecating jokes must believe they are inferior? or are they just making light of some of their foibles or habits, or quirks?
