Now obviously there’s no twist here, no surprise spin on the stereotype. And as for source, if he were opposed to cultural appropriation then there could be some decent juxtaposition or self-deprecating humor at work here.

But his usual audience know upon seeing the title of the video that he’s not about to be a beacon of sensitivity, and he knows they know. So there’s no surprise twist and no surprise source.

Which means that what we get is a racist dude, being expectedly racist in the exact same way that racists have been for decades. There’s no joke here. Just the dumb thud of people that laugh at insults just because they’re insults.

Well you are likely defining racist in a way I would not, so I can't agree. I dont think making funny absurd stereotypes is racist, especially when you are willing to lampoon a variety of cultures.

I don’t believe making some of these stereotypes can be anything but racist, given that they were literally born out of racism. Look at his “Chinaman” deal and look at any wartime superhero comics where the artists were actively trying to villify Asians.

Of course it takes another group to caricature your own. That or perhaps someone reflecting upon their own group from within another culture, Im thinking here of comedians like russel peters.

That being said, It depends on what you mean by racist. Did those wartime cartoonists think asians were inferior, probably. Does crowder? or is he merely taking an over the top caricature to invert the cultural appropriation theme, as in appropriating but in an offensive manner?

I'm confused: How does making a racist caricature critique the idea of cultural appropriation? It's basically saying "Hey, your idea of people taking aspects of other people's cultures and misrepresenting them is dumb, so to prove it I'm going intentionally misrepresent cultures

he is, in a sense, inverting the idea. Think of one of the major controversies, white women wearing chinese dress (qing chinese?) which is in admiration. He is instead appropriating, but doing so with negative stereotypes.

I don't think white women wearing chinese dresses is necessarily racist, but there are examples of people stareotyping cultures in the exact way that he does. The first couple minutes of this video sum it up pretty well:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bL4nHYFZoGs …

This is good that we've drilled down to this point, as I think the issue is I do not believe, nor does Crowder's audience, that mocking a culture is racist. If that were the case, his british caricature would somehow be racist. Imagine he is german.
